The historical fishing village famous for whaling, fishing, exploration, religion, photography, Dracula and a host of other topics sits on the edge of the North York Moors either side of the River Esk.

This is the monument to Captain Cook who travelled the world exploring in boats such as the Endeavour, Resolution and the Adventure built in Whitby. There is a museum in Whitby dedicated to his life.......
The whale’s jawbones were presented by Thor of Norway in 1963 to perpetuate the memory of the hard times when Whitby was a significant whaling port. The Scoresby family from Whitby who were part of the whaling industry actually invented the crow’s nest.....
Whitby abbey, built in 657 AD by the Saxon King of Northumbria and one time home to the poet Caedmon stands on the cliffs above the east side of Whitby......
The 199 steps leading from the east side of town up to St Mary’s church built almost in the shadow of the abbey.....
On a lighter note you also have the town’s connections with more fictional topics such as “Heartbeat” filmed in the nearby village of Goathland and also in Whitby and other surrounding towns and villages......
Also with Bram Stoker’s “Dracula” which was written in Whitby and based on a true story of a ship wrecked on the east side beach in the harbour - the Demeter where Dracula leapt ashore in the form of a black dog and ran up the 199 steps to the church........
Finally, no visit to Whitby would be complete without joining one of the town’s famous ghost walks........
